Procedures:

Preventive Care:

At Dr. Pepper’s Dental, we are passionate about oral hygiene and preventative dental care. Insufficient dental care can lead to loss of teeth, gum disease, and bone loss. Many of these issues can be prevented with the correct information and techniques for oral hygiene. We endeavour to help you form an effective oral hygiene routine & teach you the necessities to look after your teeth and gums. We recommend having your teeth cleaned at the dentist every 6 – 12 months. This is a procedure where we remove the excess build up of plaque and stains on the teeth that your regular toothbrush can not remove.

Extractions:

Sometimes a tooth can not be saved and therefore will require extraction. We understand that this can be a stressful and scary procedure to have done, but our staff are highly trained and experienced to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

During an extraction, our dentist will first numb the tooth by using both numbing gel and local anaesthetic. This will numb the area that we are working on, which can include the surrounding gums, cheek, and jaw. In most cases, the root of the tooth is firmly wrapped in bone and held tightly by ligament. Our dentist must apply pressure to expand the socket and detach the tooth from the ligament until the tooth is loose and free to come out.

You will be given care instructions on how to look after your extraction socket at home, however we are always here if you have any concerns or questions.

Crowns:

Crowns can be used for several different reasons. They are often used to replace broken or brittle teeth, to ‘cap’ a tooth following Root Canal Therapy, or even to improve aesthetics and give you a smile that you dream of. Crowns go over the remaining tooth and are made from porcelain, zirconia, gold, or even a combination of these materials.

To provide a more accurate fit and result of the crown, it does involve at least two visits to the dentist. At the first appointment we will shape the tooth that we wish to crown, take an impression of this, and send that away to a laboratory to be made. We will fit you with a temporary crown until your real crown has been made and cemented on. At the second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and the final crown will be fitted and adjusted as necessary.

Veneers:

Veneers are thin coverings of either Porcelain or Composite Resin that is bonded to the enamel of the tooth. A Veneer is often used cosmetically to improve the aesthetics of your smile and often used as an alternative to a crown. The veneer procedure is very simple, therefore are a very popular procedure to transform the overall appearance of a smile.

Veneers can be a solution for unusually shaped teeth, gaps between teeth, chipped, stained, or even discoloured teeth.  The best part is you get to choose the shape and shade of the veneers that you would like!  Prior to treatment, ask our dentist for a trial demonstration.

Teeth Whitening:

Over the years, the simple enjoyment of coffee, tea or red wine can leave our teeth stained resulting in a dull, yellow smile. We can change the appearance of this smile! We offer take home whitening systems. These are incredibly easy because the trays are universal so will fit pretty much everyone’s mouth. The hydrogen peroxide gel is already inside the tray as well, so no more squeezing out the gel into your trays and creating a mess. Its as simple as popping the trays in your mouth and leaving them in for half an hour a day.

Orthodontics:

Orthodontics are used to correct the teeth and jaws by repositioning teeth and treating irregularities of the jaw. Teeth that don’t align are often hard to clean and are at a higher risk of decay.

We offer both Invisalign and traditional braces.

Braces are now smaller, lighter and are also available in clear brackets. Braces are cemented on to the front of the teeth and are all connected with a wire. Braces will require appointments generally every 6 weeks, to review the progress and change the wires as necessary.

Invisalign are a series of clear removable retainers that are changed every 2 weeks that move your teeth week by week until they have straightened into the final position. Each retainer is manufactured to fit your mouth and suit your teeth personally.

After orthodontic work is completed, it is then recommended having a permanent retainer which will prevent your teeth from moving back to the original position that they started in. This can either  be a wire that is glued to the back of your teeth, or a removable appliance that must be worn every night.

Orthodontics can be for anyone wanting to straighten their teeth and is a way to create a naturally, beautiful smile from children to adults.

Restorations:

Restorations are placed to restore broken or decayed teeth. The process involves removing the damaged part of the tooth or the decay and then re-filling the tooth with a filling material. In dentistry we use Amalgam or Composite fillings. Amalgam fillings are an inexpensive alternative to the other filling material and is commonly used in dentistry because of its strength to endure the force of chewing. Composite (Tooth Coloured Fillings) are also used commonly as we can match them to the shade of your current teeth, so no one knows it is a filling.

It is important to keep up with your regular check up and cleans to prevent the need for fillings and to spot the early signs of decay. Category Two

Dentures:

Dentures are a very common dental appliance used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues in the mouth. There are two common styles of denture made from either acrylic or a chrome material. Replacing missing teeth will improve eating, digesting, speech, the structure of your face and of course your smile.

A Complete Denture can be worn on the upper and lower jaw and are used for patients who are missing all their teeth in the arch. A Complete Denture will enhance functions of chewing, but they also provide facial support which allows your cheeks and lips to look fuller, giving a healthy and youthful appearance.

Partial Dentures are used to replace one or more missing teeth in either the upper and lower jaw and are retained by clasps that will clip around remaining teeth. Not only do partial dentures fill the void of missing teeth, but it prevents existing teeth from drifitng forward in the mouth.

Denture appointments consist of several trips to the dentist to ensure we get the correct shape, shade, and fit of the denture.

Ask our dentist which option is best for you.

Bridges:

A bridge is a very similar concept and procedure to having a crown done. However, a bridge is used to replace a tooth or fill a gap from having one or more missing teeth. This will provide you with a permanent and functional tooth and is a great alternative to dental implants or dentures. A bridge typically is made up of two or more crowns that are fixed together and cemented onto teeth adjacent to the gap. These teeth are called abutments and will act as an anchor to the bridge. The ‘fake tooth’ is known as a pontic and is conjoined in the middle of these abutments and cemented into the area of concern, creating that beautiful smile, and filling in that missing tooth.

Similarly, to a crown, a bridge will require two appointments to the dentist. At the first appointment, we will prepare and shape the teeth, take impressions, and send them  to a dental laboratory for the bridge to be made. We will fit you with a temporary bridge for your comfort, while the real one is being made. At the second appointment, we will remove the temporary bridge, and the final bridge will be fitted and adjusted as necessary.

Implants:

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement of teeth to achieve a natural looking smile. The goal of a dental implant is to look, feel and function as a normal tooth would. A dental implant is effectively an artificial root which is inserted into the jawbone, which is placed into the site of the missing tooth or teeth. A crown is then placed on top of this to match your remaining teeth in the mouth.

General Anaesthetic:

We understand that for some people, a trip to the dentist is a very overwhelming and scary time. We also understand that due to the anxiety associated with visiting the dentist it often results in oral hygiene being neglected and causing further issues. That is why we offer a general anaesthetic service. This service is done every fortnight in Newcastle Private Hospital, where you can go to sleep and have all your dental treatment completed whilst you are asleep. Dr Pepper has done the general anaesthetics for many years so is very experienced in this area. An initial consultation in clinic is required before we can organise the general anaesthetic.

Root Canal Therapy:

We all hear the term ‘Root Canal Therapy’ and associate it with a scary or painful procedure. However, that is just a common misconception. The aim of Root Canal Therapy is to relieve pain associated with a particular tooth and consists of minimal discomfort. Root Canal Therapy is a procedure done to save a tooth where the nerve system inside has died. This is commonly caused from aggressive decay reaching the nerve of the tooth and causing an infection.  The Root Canal Procedure is like having a cavity restored, but it can take longer. It involves removing the remaining infected nerves, followed by cleaning, reshaping the canals, and filling the canals of the tooth. After a tooth has had a Root Canal Therapy, it can make the tooth brittle. We encourage having a crown placed on this tooth to give it extra strength & to prevent damage in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How often should I have my teeth cleaned at the dentist?

We recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist every 6 - 12 months. The hard build up on your teeth can make them feel furry and can not be removed with your regular toothbrush.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! We have both AfterPay & ZipPay in clinic to use.

What age should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?

We do recommend that you start bringing your children to the dentist at around the 2 - 3 year old stage. This is so we can familiarise them with the dental environment & get them use to it from a young age.

I am very anxious about dental treatment, is there a way I can have this done?

We can understand how overwhelming it is for patients to attend the dentist and have dental treatment done. For this reason we run a General Anaesthetic list every fortnight, so you can go to sleep and have your treatment done.
